Just because you make money online from the comforts of your home, does not mean that you should allow those who you interact with know just how comfortable you are. In fact, I am sure that you can think back to more than one unprofessional situation which you had engaged in with someone in the past. Perhaps you received an inappropriate e-mail, had a poor experience with a clerk while shopping, or a phone conversation which left you scratching your head. In any case, the balance between professional behavior and unacceptable behavior is slight, but extremely meaningful.
Owning and operating an online business usually involves wearing several hats. You can be performing CEO duties at 10:00 a.m., and secretarial duties just ten minutes later. Whatever your capacity at any given moment, it is critical that you maintain your professionalism.
Adhering to professionalism is quite easy. As such, I will illustrate five things which every home business owner should do to remain professional. Although these things may seem trivial, they are quite frequently neglected.
1. Spell Check
It really does not matter what you are doing. If you are about to send an e-mail, working on your website, or writing an article, you need to check your spelling. Poor spelling and grammar is a reflection of your work ethic and quality. If a customer sees that you are too lazy to spell check, they will not trust your business.
2. Telephone Etiquette
I am sure that you have called a traditional business, and heard the person on the other end state the name of the business, rather than simply saying, “Hello”. Just think about what would happen if a business simply answered the phone and said, “Hello”. You would think that you had dialed the wrong number.
Employees and business owners answer the telephone by first stating the name of the business. Doing so ensures the customer that they have dialed the correct number. Whether it is fair or not, the fact of the matter is that people do not view online businesses with the same manner of respect as they do traditional business. Therefore, you have to go above and beyond to let people who you engage with know that you are running a professional enterprise. Be sure to clearly depict your business’ name on your voice mail, and give secondary contact information, if possible. Make sure that you check your messages frequently, and never let those calling you receive a message telling them that you voice mailbox is full. If you have to share your home line with your business, instruct others in your home how to answer calls. If possible, but a distinctive ring for your business so you know when calls are coming in for your business.
3. Appearance of Professionalism
The most important professional documentation which you can have for your online business is your website. Make sure that your website is clean and easy to follow. A visitor should be able to determine the purpose and theme of your website within the first seven to ten seconds of arriving. You should also ensure that your website does not take too long to load. The internet is full of choices, therefore, customers will not wait around for your website to load. They will go to your competitor’s website.
Also, avoid using free e-mail addresses at all costs. Nothing screams “amateur” louder than this. It is easy to simply log into the cPanel of your hosting plan and create an e-mail address which matches your website’s URL.
4. Manners Matter
When you are on the phone, make sure that you have a smile on your face. As your parents taught you, say please and thank you. No matter who you are corresponding with, treat each person as they are extremely valuable to your business. Tell you customers that you appreciate their business. This will go a long way in their decision to give you future business. Make sure that customers are made comfortable with your online business by exuding the picture of professionalism and manners.
5. Know Your Business Inside and Out
You simply must be able to answer all questions pertaining to your business. If an individual wants to know how much you will charge them for a product or a service, the last thing that they want to hear is that you are in the middle of reorganizing your pricing and will have to get back to them. They simply want to make a decision of whether or not they will hire you. Realize that customers are relying on you and your experience. Experienced individuals should be able to answer simple questions regarding pricing, services, and policies.
From the very beginning it is fair to tell you that it takes a lot of hard work to successfully make money online. No one is going to hand you an opportunity in a box which will automatically generate an income for you. Moreover, since home businesses are still someone new, they are still on probation in the eyes of customers. As a result, you must shower your customers with professionalism and superior products and services to overcome this doubt. This is how you will gain their confidence.
